St Leger Trends: Can Christmas Day Complete the Derby-Leger Double?

It’s a big day at Doncaster on Saturday as the track celebrates the 250th anniversary of the St Leger Stakes. First run in 1776, the historic contest is the oldest of the five British Classics, while the stamina-sapping 1m6½f trip also makes it the longest.

With the clock ticking down to the big day, there’s a strong O’Brien flavour to the 2026 St Leger field. Of the 12 runners remaining in contention on Wednesday evening, no fewer than seven hail from the yards of Aidan or Joseph O’Brien.

Having claimed the 2023, 2024, and 2025 editions, Aidan bids to become the first trainer to win four in a row since John Scott (1838–1841). Epsom hero Christmas Day leads the Ballydoyle charge, seeking to become the first horse to complete the Derby-Leger double since the Sir Henry Cecil-trained Reference Point in 1987.

Will Aidan claim the St Leger for the tenth time? Can son Joseph bag his second win as a trainer? Or will one of the unheralded British hopes cause a shock? An intriguing renewal awaits, with the runners and riders going under starters' orders at 3:35 on Saturday afternoon.

Here, using data presented by NewBettingSites.uk, we look back at the 26 editions of the St Leger Stakes in the current century, highlight the standout stats and trends, and pick out our best bets for the great race.

Fate of the Favourite

The St Leger has been a happy hunting ground for favourite backers, with a £9.10 profit to £1 level stakes representing a healthy ROI of 35%. With so many winners returning a single-figure SP, genuinely surprising results have been few and far between. The 25/1 shot Encke caused the biggest shock when ruining Camelot’s Triple Crown bid in 2012. Since Harbour Law scored at 22/1 in 2016, every winner has been priced at 9/2 or shorter.

Top St Leger Trainers

With nine wins, Aidan O’Brien is the most successful St Leger trainer in the modern era. However, he still has work to do to catch the all-time leader, John Scott, who won the race an incredible 16 times between 1827 and 1862. The five Aidan O’Brien entries in 2026 are Christmas Day, Pierre Bonnard, Amelia Earhart, Piazza San Marco, and Action.

Of the other trainers represented this year, only Joseph O’Brien boasts a previous win in the race. The man in the saddle when Leading Light came home in front in 2013, Joseph won the race for the first time as a trainer with Galileo Chrome in 2020. Having already claimed the Epsom Oaks in 2026, Joseph takes aim at a second British Classic with Enceladus and Highwayman.

Runs in the Current Season

Falling late in the season, it makes sense that most winners had a few runs under their belts by the time the St Leger rolled around. Interestingly, no winner in our sample had fewer than three outings in the current season, while only 2007 scorer Lucarno had appeared more than six times.

Nine of the remaining 12 entries have run between three and five times in 2026. The exceptions are Action (six runs), Highwayman (six runs), and Piazza San Marco (one run).

St Leger Winners: Finishing Position Last Time Out

The evidence from the current century strongly suggests we should favour runners who arrive in form. Seventeen of 26 winners (65%) arrived on the back of a win, while 23 of 26 (88%) finished in the first three. All 26 winners at least managed a top four finish on their most recent appearance.

Action (8th), Galiyan (5th), and Alderman (5th) all fall down on this trend in 2026.

Great Voltigeur the Key St Leger Trial

Run over 1m4f, the Great Voltigeur Stakes is 2½f shorter than the St Leger. Nevertheless, that Group 2 contest has emerged as the key St Leger trial in recent years. Ten of the 26 winners in our sample arrived at Doncaster following a run in the York contest. With the 2026 Great Voltigeur winner Maltese Cross waiting for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Pierre Bonnard (2nd), Christmas Day (3rd), and Galiyan (5th) are set to represent the York form.

Of the other prep races in our table, Enceladus won the Gordon Stakes last time out, Action finished fifth in the Coral-Eclipse, and Alderman finished last of five in the Bahrain Trophy.

Going the Distance

While the Guineas reward speed and the Derby and Oaks demand tactical pace, class, and balance, the St Leger is all about stamina. However, a win over the trip is far from essential, with only six of the 26 winners (23%) having previously won over 1m6f or further. That said, 21 of 26 (81%) had at least hinted at an ability to stay this far with a win over 1m4f or further.

Action, Alderman, Golden Story, Piazza San Marco, Pierre Bonnard, and Amelia Earhart all come up short on the 1m4f+ trend.

Proven at Group Level

The 21st-century results suggest that a previous Group 1 win is an advantage but not essential. However, 21 of 26 (81%) had won at Group 3 level or above. The two biggest outliers in our sample were Arctic Cosmos (2010) and Harbour Law (2016), who had won at no higher than Class 4 level before their Classic success.

Action, Alderman, Galiyan, Golden Story, Hatteen, Highwayman, Piazza San Marco, Rebel Rocker, and Amelia Earhart all come up short on the Group win trend.

Pedigree Pointers: The Sadler’s Wells Influence

The great Sadler’s Wells has imparted a significant influence on the St Leger Stakes. Of the 26 winners in our sample, two were sired by Sadler’s Wells, six by his sons Galileo and Montjeu, and three by his grandsons Frankel and Australia. Of those not sired by Sadler’s Wells or one of his sons or grandsons, four were out of a dam by Sadler’s Wells or Galileo. Overall, 16 of 26 winners (61.5%) were closely related to the great son of Northern Dancer.

There is a strong chance that record will improve in 2026, as only Rebel Rocker, Highwayman, Golden Story, and Alderman don’t fit the Sadler’s Wells trend.

2026 St Leger Betting Tips: Christmas Comes Early for O’Brien

First and second in the betting market, Christmas Day and Enceladus are the only two runners who score a maximum seven out of seven on our key trends. Choosing between them isn’t easy, but Christmas Day looked all about stamina when winning the Derby, arrives with a 6lb higher rating than Enceladus and gets the nod. Enceladus is expected to give him the most to do, with Pierre Bonnard taken to complete the tricast.
