Saturday Racing Tips: O’Brien vs Balding in Trainers’ Title Showdown

Doncaster & Newbury 24 October

As we move into the closing weeks of October, many of the major Flat awards have been given out. Billy Loughnane is your champion jockey for 2026, Godolphin picked up the owners' award, and Ombudsman looks a sure thing for the horse of the year prize. However, the battle for the trainers' championship looks set to go down to the wire.

Ballydoyle supremo Aidan O’Brien has his eyes on a ninth title but faces a strong challenge from Kingsclere handler Andrew Balding. While the race officially runs until the end of the year, this coming Saturday is the most pivotal day remaining on the calendar. Should O’Brien bolster his advantage, he may prove impossible to catch. Here, NewBettingSites.uk, we look at the current state of play in the championship race and pick out our best bets in four key contests on a cracking afternoon of action.

Trainers’ Championship Latest: Balding Snapping at O’Brien’s Heels

Andrew Balding held the lead in the title race going into British Champions Day as he bids to win a first title, 55 years after his father lifted the trophy in 1971. With Ian sadly passing away earlier in the year, it would be a poignant success if Andrew claimed the title.

At the close of play at Ascot, Aidan O’Brien had regained the lead – pulling around £84,000 clear of Balding. Balding has chipped away at that deficit in midweek and now trails by only £61,444.20. However, if the Englishman is to swing the pendulum back in his favour, he needs to win a big pot. Unfortunately, not many significant prizes remain on the British calendar. All of which makes the following four contests particularly important:

With 12 previous wins, Aidan O’Brien is already the most successful trainer in Futurity Trophy history. Judging by the entries, he seems intent on making it lucky number 13 in 2026. Of the 17 remaining runners at the time of writing, 11 hailed from O’Brien’s County Tipperary base. Andrew Balding, in contrast, is set to saddle only the once-raced Gran Dia, who faces a steep rise in class from his class 3 Novice win at Salisbury.

Of the O’Brien squadron, the market suggests the Frankel colt Noble Exhibit is the one to be on. Arriving seeking a hat-trick, he impressed in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes last time and seems sure to go well. Haffner is another likeable sort from the O’Brien yard but may not appreciate the likely soft ground. While wary of Noble Exhibit, our selection is the Karl Burke-trained Burning Up. Showing a liking for soft ground two starts back at Haydock, he finished second in the Royal Lodge Stakes last time, despite visibly hating the Newmarket dip. The presence of Nathaniel on the dam side brings plenty of stamina, and, proven in testing ground, we like his chances of getting up late.

With Balding lacking an entry, O’Brien has a potential free hit in this sprint contest. Arriving on the back of a 12-length soft-ground maiden success at Naas, Bengal Tiger merits the utmost respect if he takes up this engagement ahead of his Horris Hill Stakes entry at Newbury.

While impressive at Naas, it’s hard to know what Bengal Tiger beat in what may not have been the strongest of maidens. At a slightly bigger price, we prefer the claims of the Hugo Palmer-trained, Oisin Murphy-ridden Sale Shark. In three previous outings in Listed company, this Bayside Boy colt won the race on his side of the track in the Windsor Castle Stakes, finished fifth when denied a clear run in the Rose Bowl Stakes, and won the Julia Graves Roses Stakes in good style. Not beaten far in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes last time (when again denied a clear run), he drops back in class and can take this.

O’Brien and Balding hold one entry apiece in the first of two Group class contests from Newbury. Both were available to back at an appealing each-way price at the time of writing. Pierre Bonnard is an intriguing contender for O’Brien, having scored in Group 1 company as a juvenile and lined up in the English Derby, Irish Derby, and St Leger earlier in the season. Balding’s Royal Playwright has had a much lighter campaign than the Irish raider and warmed up for this test with a close second behind Al Aasy in the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot.

Charlie Appleby’s Aegean Prince is all the rage in the market following his runaway success over 1m6f last time. Former Group 1 winner White Birch is another intriguing contender on his second start for Jamie Osborne. However, the one to catch our eye is the Wathnan Racing challenger Fast Tracker. Formerly based in France, this son of Churchill has improved with each start since joining Ed Walker in March. Back to winning ways in a heavy ground edition of the Listed Doonside Cup over 1m2f, he ran as though he might appreciate a first crack at 1m4f that day. He gets that chance here and can continue his progress.

Neither O’Brien nor Balding boast a particularly strong record in this race. O’Brien’s only win came back in 2005, while Balding is still waiting for his first success in a race his father won in 1976 and 1983. O’Brien has three intriguing entries in Bengal Tiger, Raging Bull, and Sergei Diaghilev, with the market favouring the last-named of that trio. Second in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes and Group 3 Autumn Stakes in his two most recent outings, he brings strong form but is untested on soft ground.

At around twice the price of Sergei Diaghilev, the one to be on is Andrew Balding’s sole entry, Nakila Sun. By Torquator Tasso, who achieved his finest hour when ploughing through the mud to claim the 2021 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, he seems to have inherited that ability to handle soft ground. Already a winner over a mile and on soft ground, he looks a strong stayer at the trip, which could be just what is required to take this.
