The 2025 edition of this sprint highlight produced the biggest shock in British Group 1 history. Sent off at odds of 200/1, Powerful Glory improbably, incredibly, came home in front. Currently leading Aidan O’Brien by a wafer-thin margin in the race to be crowned British Champion Trainer, Andrew Balding will almost certainly need at least one big result on Champions Day. His best chance comes in this contest, as 2024 and 2025 heroine Kalpana bids to become the first three-time winner of the race.

While this comes at the end of an arduous campaign, including a fine effort in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe last time, such was the case ahead of her effortless win in the 2025 edition. Clear of the field on ratings, the Juddmonte star looks like another solid favourite on the card. The William Haggas-trained Lilt has been crying out for a step up in trip and can give the selection most to do.

The market for the feature 1m event may be heavily influenced by who Aidan O’Brien decides to run on the day. Irish 2,000 Guineas champ Gstaad looked like the number one, but the rumour mill suggests he may head to the Champion Stakes, with French Derby champ Constitution River dropping in trip for this assignment.

Charlie Appleby’s Talk Of New York currently tops the market and should go well, but an each-way punt looks the way to go. From a raft of possible contenders, the William Haggas-trained More Thunder earns our vote. In his two previous domestic Group 1 outings over this trip, he has finished a running-on second in both the Lockinge Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes. Arriving in form, following an impressive win in the Park Stakes, we like his chances of producing a strong finish off a solid pace to at least hit the frame.

Last but not least, the feature event on the card as middle-distance stars from Britain, Ireland, and France do battle over 1m2f. Defending champion Calandagan tops the market but hasn’t been quite at his imperious best in 2026. Successful in the 2025 King George, he had to settle for second this time around and a similar scenario may unfold here.

Almaqam and Arc runner-up Bay City Roller make the shortlist but, over this trip, on likely quick ground for this time of year, the one to be on is the John & Thady Gosden-trained Ombudsman. We have to forgive his below-par effort in the Juddmonte International last time, but the pre-race showers were all against a horse who relies on a devastating turn of foot on good or quicker going. He should get that here, and his most recent effort over this track and trip saw him slam Minnie Hauk, Almaqam, and dual Arc winner Daryz with a blistering display in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.
