Sizzling Summer Continues: Weekend Sporting Action, Best New Betting Sites and Offers

King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes

The brunt of the heat wave in Britain may now be behind us, but things don’t show much sign of cooling down on the sporting front. Racing fans, in particular, have plenty to look forward to in the coming week, with Saturday afternoon seeing Ascot’s biggest race of the year outside of the Royal Meeting, and the always excellent Glorious Goodwood Festival kicking off on Tuesday 26th July. For those who seek a little more speed than that on show at Goodwood, Sunday’s French Grand Prix from Var should fit the bill.

Here we take a closer look at the upcoming action and pick out a couple of the best new player offers, for those looking to add to the excitement with a bet or two.

Saturday, July 23rd– Horse Racing: King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Horse Racing Betting Sites

All eyes on Ascot this coming Saturday for one of the most prestigious all-age 1m4f events of the season. Just six go to post this year, but anything the field lacks in quantity, it certainly makes up for in quality. Heading the market at 5/4 with Betfred is the Ralph Beckett trained, Westover. Deemed an unlucky loser by jockey Rob Havlin when third in the Epsom Derby, this son of the brilliant Frankel went some way to confirming that assessment when running right away with the Irish version of that race at the Curragh. If able to replicate that effort, this striking bay colt ought to go well.

Heading up the opposition is another runner considered unfortunate not to have landed an Epsom classic – John Gosden’s fast-finishing Oaks runner-up, Emily Upjohn (9/4 Betfred). Previously unbeaten in three career starts, she is rated 3lbs inferior to Westover, but gets that back courtesy of the fillies’ allowance and may well have more to come. Sticking to the theme of unlucky horses, Mishriff (3/1 Boylesports) is next in line on the back of a neck defeat to Vadeni in the Coral Eclipse - a race he might well have won but for suffering severe trouble in running. Second to Adayar in this race twelve months ago, John Gosden’s globetrotter may well go one better. Throw in Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner, Torquator Tasso, Aidan O’Brien’s back-to-form Broome, and the admirable Pyledriver, and this looks all set to be a cracker.

Sunday July 24th: Formula 1: French Grand Prix

Switching from the turf to the tarmac, Sunday sees the latest leg in what is shaping up to be a thrilling F1 season. Having won six successive GPs from Italy onwards – five of which fell to number one drive Max Verstappen – Red Bull Racing had been threatening to run away with both the drivers and constructors’ championships. However, those writing off Ferrari have been made to eat their words, with “The Prancing Horse” roaring back into contention with back-to-back wins in Britain and Austria.

Red Bull will likely have high hopes of reasserting at this track though, with Verstappen having taken the chequered flag here in 2021. The current championship leader is a 6/5 shot with Betfred to retain his title, with Leclerc priced at 6/4 with the same firm in what is a tight battle for favouritism.

Tuesday 26th to Saturday 30th July – Horse Racing: Glorious Goodwood Festival

With the King George having whet the appetite of racing fans, Tuesday afternoon sees one of the biggest racing bonanzas of the season, with the latest edition of the Qatar Goodwood Festival. Spread over five days, the West Sussex venue lays on a total of 36 contests for our punting pleasure, with many of the stars of the season on show.

Highlights throughout the week are plentiful. Can Stradivarius gain revenge on Ascot Gold Cup conqueror Kyprios in the Goodwood Cup? Will the world’s highest-rated racehorse, Baeed, extend his unbeaten run in the Sussex Stakes? And to round things off we have the 28-runner conundrum of the Stewards Cup Handicap – always one of the most popular betting heats of the season. All in all, a meeting not to be missed!
