Something For The Weekend: Best Bets for England v Spain in the Nations League and Cambridgeshire Day at Newmarket

The Premier League may be taking an extended break, but we still have a packed sporting schedule this coming Saturday. The third and final day of the Cambridgeshire meeting at Newmarket sets the ball rolling ahead of a huge evening showdown as England welcome World Cup winners Spain to Wembley Stadium.

While for some countries, the Nations League is only a rung above an international friendly, Spain tend to treat the competition pretty seriously: La Roja have made the final of the past three editions. All of which suggests England face a tough task in ending an unbeaten run that now stretches back to March 2024.

If there is any encouragement for Harry Kane and co. it is that Spain’s suffocating style wasn’t quite as impenetrable in their latest Nations League campaign as it was at the World Cup. Whereas Luis de la Fuente’s men conceded only once in eight matches in the USA, their previous performance in this competition featured 2-2 draws in Portugal and the Netherlands, a 2-1 win in Denmark and a 4-1 success in Switzerland.

Both teams to score looks like a solid place to start in our England v Spain Bet Builder. Cheveley Park Stakes: Saturday – 2:27pm

If the main protagonists all turn up, this promises to be one of the most compelling juvenile events of 2026. On the form we have seen to date, it would be a significant shock if the winner didn’t emerge from the star-studded trio of Sun Goddess, Senorita Bonita, or Libertango.

All three runners tick the Group winner and top-three finish boxes. However, Sun Goddess earns the Aidan O'Brien bonus point. While it would be no surprise to see her win this, a collateral form line suggests she may be worth taking on. Back in June, Sun Goddess finished second to Libertango in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. In her next start, Libertango finished second to Senorita Bonita in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes. With Senorita Bonita backing that up with a stunning four-length romp in the Group 1 Prix Morny, the Simon & Ed Crisford star is taken to prove too quick for Sun Goddess on the run to the line.

Middle Park Stakes: Saturday – 3:00pm

Of the eleven runners remaining in contention for the colts’ contest, Carry The Flag, Confucius, Force Noir, Hell Of A Spin, and Marco Polo have not yet won at Group level, while Man’s Best Friend and Orthodox finished outside the top 3 last time. All of which leaves a shortlist of Folsom Blues, Great Barrier Reef, Inner City Blues, and Push The Boat Out.

Folsom Blues was a brilliant winner of the National Stakes over 7f last time but is zero-from-two over this 6f trip. Push The Boat Out ended the unbeaten record of Great Barrier Reef in the Round Tower last time. However, he is 5lb worse off with that rival here, making the pair tough to split. In a tricky heat, the one to get the vote is Inner City Blues from the red-hot Charlie Appleby operation. By Blue Point and out of a Muhaarar mare, he is ideally bred for this test and has impressed in winning his two starts to date, including the Group 2 July Stakes last time out.

Cambridgeshire Handicap: Saturday – 3:40pm

With a maximum field of 35 and runners often splitting into distinct groups, the Cambridgeshire is a notoriously tricky contest. Recent results show just how tough this race can be, with the past ten years featuring just one winning favourite and five winners priced at 20/1 or bigger.

The John & Thady Gosden-trained Gavriel is all the rage in the market in 2026. As an in-form, unexposed three-year-old, there’s a lot to like about his claims. However, we much prefer an each-way punt, and the one to be on is the Ed Dunlop-trained Principality. This four-year-old ticks the key trend boxes, has a win at Newmarket to his name, and was last sighted finishing with a flourish over 1m at Salisbury. Stepping up in trip here, he can at least hit the frame at rewarding odds.
