Premier League Weekend Betting Tips

There were no shortage of talking points on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, most notably Manchester United’s humbling at Hull and Brentford’s battering of big-spending Tottenham Hotspur. Moving on to Match Day 2, we have a full slate of fixtures over the bank holiday weekend, beginning with Crystal Palace vs Manchester City on Friday evening and concluding with the Monday Night Football clash between Aston Villa and Arsenal.

With nine new managers and many players settling into their new surroundings, the early stages of the campaign are notoriously tricky from a betting perspective. However, here, using data presented by NewBettingSites.uk, I look at the stats from Match Day 1 and pick out my five best bets for what promises to be a cracking weekend of action.

Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest – Saturday 12:30pm

First up is this clash between two managers at new clubs this season. Both Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner saw a late goal alter their opening result – Liverpool salvaged a point with a last gasp penalty at Newcastle and Forest were undone by an 88th-minute Anton Stach strike. Liverpool have enjoyed a free week to prepare, whereas Forest were dumped out of the Carabao Cup – again at the hands of Leeds.

The Tricky Trees have won their last two trips to Anfield, including a stunning 3-0 success last season. However, when looking at the stats from the opening game, it is tough to predict a similar result. Liverpool didn’t earn many plaudits for their display at St James’s Park but, while they weren’t brilliant, they still amassed an impressive 3.13 xG on the road and comfortably won the shots-on-target battle. Forest, in contrast, struggled to create much offensively in a game which didn’t see much goalmouth action. Liverpool should win this, but they may not keep a clean sheet. The Reds conceded twice to rapid counterattacks against Newcastle - an area in which Glasner’s teams tend to be strong.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United – Saturday 5:30pm

It’s fair to say the season didn’t begin as well as Spurs fans may have hoped, with Roberto Di Zerbi’s men producing an abject performance in defeat at Brentford. Despite bossing possession, they created little of note and were repeatedly carved open at the other end. On the plus side, Spurs got that result out of their system with a 5-1 hammering of Charlton in the Carabao Cup.

Following a turbulent transfer window, the departure of Eddie Howe, and an underwhelming pre-season, it was hard to know what to expect from Newcastle this term. As such, the Magpies surpassed most expectations when coming within a whisker of beating Liverpool at St. James’s Park. Having followed that up with an entertaining 3-2 win over West Brom, the Magpies will look to keep the positive momentum going.

If Spurs play like they did last week, Newcastle could cause a minor upset here. However, they surely must improve in their first league fixture at home. Predicting the result looks tricky, but with the sides conceding 7.17 xG between them in their opener, a bet on goals may pay off.

Chelsea vs Brighton – Sunday 2pm

Two sides who enjoyed a winning start to the season clash at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Chelsea earned plenty of praise for their 3-2 success at Craven Cottage, which got the Xabi Alonso era off to a flying start. While Cole Palmer was electric, the Blues faced a side who look set to play one of the most wide-open styles in the league. Brighton dismantled an understrength Villa side in a game that was over as a contest before the break. Matching their xG with actual goals, they prevented the Villans from having a single shot on target.

As mentioned in our squad value predictions article, we expect Chelsea to go well this season. However, they have lost their last four encounters with Brighton, and it was hard not to be impressed with the Seagulls on opening weekend. At 3/1, it is worth backing the settled south-coast club to extend that run over a Chelsea side likely to improve as the season progresses.

Leeds United vs Brentford – Sunday 2pm

Two games, two wins, and no goals conceded: Daniel Farke’s Leeds United have made a positive start to the season. However, this is likely to prove tougher than those league and cup clashes with Nottingham Forest. Following an impressive win over Spurs, Brentford battered Birmingham 6-1 on the road in the Carabao Cup in midweek. The early evidence suggests the Bees are ready to build on an excellent first season under Keith Andrews.

The oddsmakers have this very close 50/50, and the two games between the sides last season ended in a draw. While another draw wouldn’t be a surprise, Brentford’s opening day performance was backed up by the stats and, having gone goal crazy again in midweek, they may have too much for Leeds here. With Brentford particularly dangerous in wide areas and bossing the corner count against Spurs, I prefer a mini Bet Builder to a straight win bet on the visitors.

Manchester United vs Ipswich Town – Sunday 4:30pm

Our final selection comes from Old Trafford in a game where the home faithful will demand a response. Expected to start the season on a winning note, Manchester United instead lost to a newly promoted Hull City outfit who are odds-on to be relegated. Next up, they face another promoted club as the Tractor Boys come calling to the Theatre of Dreams.

Ipswich enjoyed a positive start to the season, with Jack Clarke netting a late winner against his former club. Backing that up with a 3-1 home win over Leicester in the Carabao Cup, Gary O’Neill’s men head into this game brimming with confidence.

If Manchester United rediscover their form from the back end of last season - when they put three past Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton - this could be a long afternoon for Ipswich. While there must be a fair chance they bounce back having had the full week off to prepare, skinny odds about a home win make minimal appeal. Siding with a glut of goals is the better option. Poor as United were last week, they still created a handful of good chances and can be expected to up their xG at home. The last match between United and a Gary O’Neill side saw United win 4-3 at Molineux in 2024. If the new Ipswich manager adopts a similar approach here, we could be in for a thriller.
