Manchester City Become Premier League’s Most Valuable Club
Manchester City have dominated proceedings on the field in the Premier League for the past couple of seasons, and this coming weekend they could lift their second consecutive Premier League title. However, it is not just on the field where they are having success, they are also making great strides off the field which we have seen highlighted in some recent financial reports.
The club have overtaken their near neighbours Manchester United as the Premier League’s most valuable club. While United are falling behind and decreasing in value, City are most certainly on the up, and there is a case to be made for this being the biggest advantage that City have had over their neighbours both on and off the field.
City’s valuation has gone up by nearly £400 million to take them up to being valued at £2.364 billion, while United have gone in the opposite direction. United’s valuation fell by £376 million, taking them down to still a very respectable £2.087 billion.
Fellow top six clubs, Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea also saw big rises in their figures, but Arsenal, like Manchester United, suffered a blow, which was blamed on the lack of Champions League football for the club.
The top six together makeup 74% of the overall total value of the Premier League, showing that the gap between them and the rest is as strong as ever. It may be a surprise to some to see Burnley as the seventh club in behind them, although they are nearly £1 billion behind Arsenal, and when Arsenal have fallen in value, that shows just how huge the gap actually is. Burnley have been described as the ‘most sensibly’ run club in the Premier League and were praised for their money management and tight spending when this report came out.
As for what the future holds, there is no reason why City can’t continue to go from strength to strength both on and off the field. While the Champions League continues to elude them, domestic dominance is something they will have their eyes set on.
If there is one Premier League club who could stop that, it appears to be Liverpool right now. Unlike City, they are still in the Champions League, although they face a tough test to remain in the competition. They are the team pushing City for the league title, and with both squads looking very strong, expect to see them and City continue to battle it out for the next few years.
With Liverpool also moving in the right direction off the field in terms of their finances, we could be set for a period where both Liverpool and Manchester City become the two dominating forces in English football in all areas. Whether it is financial reports showing how good they are at spending their money, or Premier League titles on the field, we can expect to see a lot more of these two battling it out over the coming years.
