Premier League Clubs Face Tough Test to Make Champions League Final

Champions League Final

At the start of the week, we had two Champions League semi-finals, both with an English club taking part, and the chance to have an all-English final. That chance still remains after the first leg, but with defeats for both, it is now a lot further away.

Ajax vs Tottenham

Tottenham were beaten at home by Ajax as the Dutch side continue their impressive run in the Champions League. The good news for Spurs is that the game only finished 1-0, so they have a chance to turn things around when the teams meet again next Wednesday.

More good news for Tottenham is that striker Heung Min Son will be back for the game and that should give them a huge boost. Already missing Harry Kane, Son was also out for the first leg after picking up a yellow card against Manchester City. They lacked a real attacking threat in the first game and he will certainly bring that back for them.

Having said that, it may not be enough, as Ajax are continuing to prove people wrong. They are not exceptionally good in any area, but rock solid all over the pitch as we saw on Tuesday night. This is going to be a tough task for Spurs, and I don’t think they are up to it, so I see Ajax as the team to qualify for the final from this game.

Liverpool vs Barcelona

A day after Tottenham were beaten, Liverpool suffered the same fate away from home at the hands of Barcelona. With 20 minutes to go, Liverpool were one goal down and would probably have been very happy with their performance. However, up stepped Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi to change things.

Messi scored twice in the space of just a few minutes, including a wonderful free-kick that no goalie in the world was stopping, giving Barcelona a three-goal lead to take to Anfield. I’m sure Liverpool will go all out and attack Barcelona, and with the vocal home support behind them, this won’t be an easy experience for the Spanish side.

However, those two late goals in the first leg were vital, and they can make the difference here. I think Liverpool will win on the night, but not by enough to win the overall tie, with Barcelona being the team to make the final.
