King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes: 21st Century Trends and Betting Tips

In this article, we analyse every King George since 2000 to identify the trends which matter most for Saturday's renewal.
With the World Cup in the rearview mirror and the start of the Premier League season on the horizon, the coming week sees horse racing take centre stage in the lives of punters. Next week, the eyes of the racing world turn to Sussex for the five-day Qatar Goodwood Festival. Before that, Ascot lays on its summertime Group 1 showstopper on Saturday afternoon.
First run in 1951, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2025. 2026 sees the prize money increased to £2 million, making the King George Britain’s joint richest race, alongside the Derby.
Won by superstar names including Nijinsky, Brigadier Gerard, Dancing Brave, and Galileo, to name but four, the King George boasts an illustrious roll of honour. A beacon to top-class milers from Britain, Ireland, France, and beyond, we have a talented international field assembling in 2026.
The past two editions have fallen to the French, thanks to the exploits of Goliath and Calandagan – both of whom are back for more in 2026. But how will this year’s race pan out?
Here, using data presented by NewBettingSites.uk, we look back at the 26 editions held so far in the 21st Century and identify the strongest King George stats and trends. It would be a shame to go to all that trouble without placing a bet to support our analysis. As such, we conclude with our best trends-based bet for the big race in Berkshire.
Fate of the Favourite

The favourite has a rock-solid record in the King George, with the past 26 editions showing an impressive 50% strike rate for the market leader. However, with all of those favourites priced between 1/3 and 5/2 – including six odds-on shots – a £1 level stakes bet on the jolly only just squeezed into profit. 24 of the 26 winners returned a single-figure SP, with the big shocks provided by 18/1 chance Pyledriver in 2022 and 25/1 winner Goliath in 2024.
Age of the Winner

The four-year-olds boast much the best record in recent years, with that age bracket registering 2½ times as many winners as the Classic generation and 3 times as many as the older runners. Interestingly, at the time of writing, the market was headed by the five-year-old Calandagan, followed by the three-year-old Benvenuto Cellini. The four four-year-olds remaining among the current entries were Bay City Roller, Lambourn, Masquerade Ball, and Minnie Hauk.
Top Trainers

John Gosden leads the way in the current century but does not hold an entry this year. Of the trainers in the above table, only Aidan O’Brien and Francis-Henri Graffard are set to be represented on Saturday afternoon. O’Brien has four entries in the shape of Action, Benvenuto Cellini, Lambourn, and Minnie Hauk. Graffard saddles the past two winners of the race, Calandagan and Goliath.
Top Sires

At first glance, there doesn’t appear to be an overwhelmingly strong trend concerning the pedigrees of the King George winners. However, a closer look reveals a strong Sadler’s Wells flavour to recent results. Sadler’s Wells is the sire of both Galileo and Montjeu, while Galileo is the sire of Nathaniel, Frankel, and Gleneagles. If we put all that together, eleven of the 26 winners were sired by Sadler's Wells, one of his sons, or one of his grandsons. That trend becomes stronger when we consider that five further winners boasted Sadler’s Wells as a damsire.
Looking ahead to this year’s edition, Action, Benvenuto Cellini, Lambourn, Minnie Hauk, Gleneagles, and, to a lesser extent, Bay City Roller, all tick the Sadler’s Wells box.
Arriving in Form an Advantage

Recent results suggest that it may pay to focus on those runners who head to Ascot on the back of a win, or at the very least, a runner-up effort. Looking at the 2026 field, Bay City Roller, Calandagan, and Benvenuto Cellini all won last time, while Masquerade Ball, Wurttemberg, Kalpana, and Minnie Hauk finished second.
Routes to the Race

Winners have taken a variety of routes to victory in the current century, but only five races appear more than once in the above table. Calandagan and Lambourn arrive via the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Kalpana and Goliath finished second and third in the Hardwicke Stakes, Minnie Hauk finished second in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, and Benvenuto Cellini and Action represent the Irish Derby form.
Other Factors

Betting Selections: Marvellous Minni to Beat the Boys
As previous winners of the race, Calandagan and Goliath merit the utmost respect, but both fall down on the ideal age trend, as does the impressive Irish Derby winner Benvenuto Cellini, and last year’s runner-up Kalpana.
Masquerade Ball and Wurttemberg bid to land a first win for Japan, but neither has previously won over 1m4f.
All of which leaves Bay City Roller, Lambourn, and Minnie Hauk. Of that trio, clear preference is for Minnie Hauk. Hailing from the yard of Aidan O’Brien and sired by the mighty Frankel, she is a good fit on the trainer and sire trends. She also boasts outstanding form at this trip, having won the English, Irish, Cheshire, and Yorkshire Oaks last season, before finishing a head second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. At 7/1 with BetMGM, she represents solid each-way value.
