Stewards Cup: 21st Century Trends and Betting Tips

In this article, we analyse every edition of the Stewards Cup since 2000 to identify the trends which matter most for the big sprint handicap on Saturday afternoon.
The 2026 edition of the Qatar Goodwood Festival served up a treat over the opening three days, with Scandinavia, Bow Echo, and Diamond Necklace shining brightly on the Group 1 stage. The fifth and final day sees a change of pace in the feature event, as a maximum field of 28 lines up to tackle the 6f trip in the fast-and-furious Stewards Cup Handicap.
The definition of a racing cavalry charge, this £250,000 contest sees the runners spread right across the track, with luck in running inevitably playing a role at what can be a tricky track to ride. The scene of successful gambles and significant shocks in almost equal measure, the Stewards Cup is one of the most popular punting events at Glorious Goodwood.
Confirmed on Thursday 30 July, the 2026 field includes two previous winners of the race, a well-backed course-and-distance winner, and a host of sprint handicap regulars. But who will come home in front in the Sussex sun?
Here, using data presented by NewBettingSites.uk, we look back at the 26 editions held so far in the 21st Century and identify the strongest Stewards Cup stats and trends. Finally, we use the results of our analysis to pick out our best bets for the 2026 Stewards Cup.
Fate of the Favourite

As a big-field handicap, you wouldn’t expect the favourites' winning percentage to match the ≈30% across all races. As such, six wins from 26 (23.08%) is a pretty solid record and was enough to produce a £4.92 profit to £1 level stakes on the market leader. At the other end of the scale, the biggest shocks came courtesy of 40/1 shots Conquest (2008) and Get It (2024).
Age of the Winner

The Stewards Cup is open to all runners aged three and older. Historically, the three-year-olds have held their own, but recent renewals have belonged to the older runners. Not too old, however, with 2017 champ Lancelot Du Lac the only horse older than six to score in the current century. With 22 of 26 (84.62%) winners falling into the 4-6 age bracket, that seems a sensible place to start when seeking the 2026 winner. Northern Champion is the only three-year-old in the 2026 field. Annaf, Mitbaahy, and 2024 winner Get It are the three runners aged older than six.
Well Handicapped

Every pound helps in a competitive handicap such as this. While the eye is often drawn to young improvers who may be ahead of their mark, results suggest that we should pay close attention to those runners who have been rated higher in the past. Seventeen of the 26 winners (65.38%) were racing off a mark either at or below their previous career high rating. Combining this information with our age trend brings the field down to 19 - still some way to go to identify our selections.
Finishing Position Last Time Out

As a 16+ runner handicap, the Stewards Cup pays out each way on the first four finishers, with several firms offering additional places in the lead-up to the race. Recent renewals suggest it may pay to focus on those runners who achieved a top four finish last time out, with 16 of 26 winners (61.53%) falling into that category. Applying this trend to the remaining runners brings us down to nine.
Recent Run an Advantage

Recent results suggest that we should favour those runners who arrive fit and well following a recent outing. Twenty-one of the winners in our sample had appeared within the last thirty days. Market leader Far Above Dream is the most notable runner to fall down on this trend as our list comes down to seven.
Routes to the Race

As one of the most fiendishly competitive Class 2 handicaps on the calendar, the Stewards Cup is a tough assignment for those looking to strike in this grade for the first time. 22 of the 26 winners in our sample (84.62%) had previously won at Class 2 level or above. This trend brings us down to five.
Other Factors

Betting Selections: Two Tribes at the Double
Having applied all of the above, the 28-runner Stewards Cup field whittles down to only one. Interestingly, our last horse standing knows just what it takes to succeed here, having surged 2¼l clear of the field in the 2025 edition. Two Tribes is 7lb higher this time around but was value for more than the winning margin twelve months ago, and scored off this mark of 102 at Meydan in January. He’s without a win in six outings since that success, but hinted that his time may be near when finishing a fine second in the International Handicap at Ascot last time.
Two Tribes is the main selection, but I will also add the Richard Hannon-trained Fandom to the staking plan. This five-year-old only fell down on the handicap-starts trend, having only appeared in six turf handicaps. However, as a Listed-winning juvenile, he has a touch of class about him and is only 1lb higher than when finishing well for third over 5f at Ascot last time out. With his yard in fine form at present, he’s worth chancing at a big price.
