Online Gambling Behaviour UK

The trend for online gambling is continuing and as more and more technologically minded youngsters bet, we are only going to see online gambling rise. The big draw with online gambling is the ease in which you can place a bet, with multiple ways to bet and wagers placed in seconds, it really is as easy as it has ever been to gamble.

Devices Used

Online gamblers took part in a survey to see what the most used devices were and the results from the survey were not surprising at all. The most popular way to bet online is with a laptop, with 50% of gamblers using this method as either their only online gambling method or one of many methods. Mobile phones at 39% and PC’s at 33% were the next two common methods used by online gamblers. Betting on mobile phones has increased 10% since 2016 and that is something that looks only set to continue as gambling companies put more time and money into creating mobile apps to ensure betting is made as easy as possible.

What These 2021 Smartphone Statistics Mean For The Gambling Industry

No single technology has changed the gambling industry landscape more since the invention of the internet than the smartphone. People the world over can now access everything from roulette to baccarat, betting and games on the go. And even those who don’t own a desktop or laptop computer can still take part from the comfort of their homes.

According to the latest UK Gambling Commission report supports 50% of respondents had gambled on their phone in the past four weeks. Proving that smartphone trends have big implications for the industry. Not just in service delivery, but also in marketing opportunities.

So, we’ve put together this infographic to highlight the most important mobile usage statistics from around the world. And, in case you don’t have a lot of time, we’ve picked out the numbers that matter most to gambling industry professionals this year...

  • Growth will centre in emerging economies, with almost 75% of web traffic in India and 60% in Africa being from mobile phones
  • Social media adverts need to be mobile-friendly, with 55% of total social media engagement being from mobile users
  • Mobile users are more impatient than users of other devices, with 50% leaving a site if images or other content takes too long to load
  • UK smartphone penetration hit 82.2% in 2021, making it the highest in the world

Location of Online Gambling

With so many different portable gambling methods, where people bet is also becoming an important factor and something that people were asked about during the survey. Despite the mobile options, 97% of people still said that they placed bets while they were at home. This is no surprise, and although betting at home, mobiles and tablets will still be used for convenience. One thing that looks set to increase over the coming years is betting in the workplace, 13% of people currently do this. With time of the essence, people are finding at time they can to fit in their gambling needs.

In-Play Betting

In-play betting is becoming a huge part of what bookmakers offer, although there has been no real increase in the amount of people betting in-play. 26% of gamblers said they had placed an in-play bet over the past four weeks, a figure that is similar to previous years. We are seeing more and more in-play betting opportunities being made available and it would be no surprise to see this number eventually rise.

Number of Accounts

Gamblers have been asked how many accounts they hold that they have played with regularly in the last 12 months and the number reported on average is four. This is an increase from three in 2016, but the number was four back in 2015 so the figures haven’t really risen too much. There are a huge number of new bookmakers out there and while people may move from one to another, the number of active accounts is likely to stay the same.

ESports

ESports are definitely an area to watch as they continue to grow, and this is the first time they have been involved in the survey. The figures show that 7% of gamblers have placed a bet on eSports before, with 6% doing so in the last 12 months. This is a key area and something bookmakers are beginning to focus on so the 2018 results for the survey will be very interesting in this section.
