The first weekend in May sees one of the most influential fixtures of the flat season unfold at Newmarket. Beginning on Friday, 1 May, the three-day Guineas Festival is home to the opening Classics of the 2026 campaign, as the cream of the three-year-old milers do battle in the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas.

As ever, the big guns will be out in force for two of the most prestigious events of the year, with leading contenders representing the top British and Irish yards. While both races have a clear favourite, this looks to be a particularly open year, with a whole host of contenders heading to HQ with realistic claims.

Along with most of the punting public, we can’t let the opening Classics of the season pass by without attempting to unearth the winners. Saturday 3:35 Newmarket – Betfred 2000 Guineas Stakes

The build-up to the 2026 edition of the 2,000 Guineas has been anything but smooth, with a spate of injuries and underwhelming trials muddying the waters. One of the few constants amidst this turbulence is the unbeaten Bow Echo. Prominent in the market at the end of 2025, the George Boughey-trained star is now the clear market leader for the £525,000 contest. Faultless in three starts last season, he has much to recommend him but is just a little on the short side for our liking at around the 5/2 mark.

Of those available at double-figure prices, the John & Thady Gosden-trained Oxagon makes some appeal following an impressive win in the Craven Stakes over this track and trip. With Oisin Murphy in the saddle, he isn’t dismissed lightly but may not enjoy such an easy time in front here. Puerto Rico was another we liked for an each-way punt, but with that horse withdrawn at the final declaration stage, we fancy the boys in blue of Godolphin may be the team to concentrate on.

Having saddled the last two winners of this, Charlie Appleby sends a strong two-pronged attack into battle in the shape of Distant Storm and King’s Trail. Distant Storm is the shorter price of the duo, having performed well in Group company last season, but we just prefer the claims of King’s Trail. By the 2009 2,000 Guineas winner Sea The Stars and out of the mare Crown Walk, who scored in Group 3 company at around this trip, he is nicely bred for the task at hand. Two low-key all-weather wins may not be the obvious Guineas prep but represents a similar route to the race to the one taken by Notable Speech, who won the 2024 edition for Appleby at 16/1. King’s Trail is only around half that price but just earns the vote over his stablemate.

Sunday 3:35 Newmarket – Betfred 1000 Guineas Stakes

Turning to the fillies’ Classic, there is a chance that the market leader Precise is the superstar she looked during her juvenile season. On paper, this Aidan O’Brien filly possibly shouldn’t be as good as she appears over a mile, being by Starspangledbanner, who is predominantly recognised as a speed influence, and out of a mare who failed to win in nine career outings.

Nevertheless, a horse can be greater than the sum of its parts, and this one oozed class in winning four of five starts at two, with the manner in which she travelled and quickened hinting at something a little out of the ordinary. Her final success in the Fillies Mile over this course and distance reads particularly well, as she breezed past a quality field which included the reopposing Venetian Lace and Evolutionist. While not in love with that pedigree for this assignment, we are reluctant to leave this talented filly out of our staking plan.

With that slight doubt in the back of our minds, we are keen to back up our main selection with an each-way punt. Precise’s stablemate Diamond Necklace is an obvious alternative, while we wouldn’t be surprised to see Rose Ghaiyyath go well at a really big price. However, the one we like best is the Charlie Appleby-trained Abashiri. This one again stands out on pedigree, being by the mighty Frankel and out of the Group 1 winning mare Sobetsu. Raced only once in her juvenile campaign, she sauntered to success in her Kempton debut. Falling firmly into the “could be anything” category, she is worth chancing to at least hit the frame.
