Premier League: Who are the Punters Pals?

Having just edged past the mid-point of the 2022/23 Premier League season, the biggest and best league on the planet continues to deliver, with the races for the title and European positions, and the battle to beat the drop looking as tight as ever.

Another area in which the Premier League continues to live up to expectations is in providing a regular stream of thrills and spills from a punting perspective. From Arsenal’s relentless pursuit of the title – which few predicted at the start of the season – to shock results such as Leeds United’s win at Liverpool, and Brentford’s stunning late success at the Etihad, the current campaign hasn’t gone entirely to script.

Given the unpredictable nature of the season to date, the halfway stage seems as good a time as any to take a look back at the results so far, in an effort to unearth any potentially profitable betting strategies. With that in mind, we have analysed the betting results for two of the most popular betting markets – Match Result, and Over 2.50 Goals, using data presented by Newbettingsites.uk.

No real surprise to see Brentford at the top of this table, considering that win over Manchester City came at huge odds of 16/1. Without that 17-point return, the Bees would have produced a negative return – albeit only just.

Next up comes Arsenal whose fantastic 84.21% win rate has simply been impossible for the bookmakers to keep up with. Manchester United’s 60% win rate isn’t anything out of the ordinary for the Old Trafford club, but the uneven spread of results has produced a healthy profit for backers of the Red Devils – overall Eric ten Haag’s men have been winning more games as underdogs than would usually be expected.

Elsewhere near the top of the list, Brighton continue to be underestimated by almost everyone – including the bookmakers, and Fulham are in the process of becoming this season’s overachievers among the newly promoted sides.

Profitable to follow in the Match Betting market, Marco Silva’s Fulham side have also been one of the most entertaining sides in the league this season, with over three-quarters of their games featuring three or more goals. That has been good enough for a £7.41 profit to £1 level stakes, which is equivalent to over 33% ROI. Brighton are also defying the belief that they play a lot of pretty football without the end product to match and are the next best performers in this market.

At the other end of the spectrum, we have Nottingham Forest (who perhaps aren’t receiving the number of heavy beatings as the bookmakers anticipated), clean-sheet kings Newcastle United, and West Ham who have mastered the dubious art of losing tight encounters.

Whether these trends play out in the second half of the season remains to be seen. It is however unlikely that many of the sides will drastically alter their playing styles at this stage, with the possible exception of Everton under Sean Dyche. The above data does at least provide a little food for thought when picking out those bets.
