UK Gambling Commission Partners with Twitter to Limit Gambling Content

The UK Gambling Commission has announced that it is working with Twitter to give their users the chance to limit the amount of gambling content they see on their social media feed. The UK GC has created a four-page document for users of the platform in which it details ways that users can turn off and mute specific gambling-related words in order to see less content while browsing.

This is all part of a new strategy employed by the Gambling Commission and targets the way that vulnerable individuals are exposed to gambling content. Something they have found is that individuals don’t know or have the ability to stop seeing the content if they wish to, something that this document is designed to stop.

Throughout the four pages of the guide, you will see different ways in which you can cut down the amount of gambling content you see on your feed. This is designed to be an aid though, and not something that can provide a full solution and stop all gambling content from appearing via your Twitter feed.

The main part of the document focuses on unticking a variety of gambling and sports-related words that will help block content from appearing on your feed. This will mute them, and suggestions in the document include words such as ‘new customer’ and ‘boost’ something that is seen a lot on gambling posts that are targeting new players.

There is now a function where you can block promoted tweets if you wish, something a lot of gambling companies do in order to put their products in front of potential new customers. People are also advised to go through the list of people that they follow, unfollow any accounts that are related to gambling and also look out for account where notifications are turned on, and look to turn these off if they offer gambling related notifications.

The option to block accounts from seeing your profile is also there, and there is a recommendation that gambling-related account should be on your block list. This will prevent them from seeing you and following you, in an attempt to grab your interest in their products so that you follow them back.

Social media is a big area for the UK Gambling Commission, and the guide they have set up for Twitter users is something that they want other social media channels to take on board. These general rules can be used by those who are vulnerable across a number of platforms to make their experience better.

With Twitter, the UK Gambling Commission and even the UK government all signalling that they want to improve online safety for those vulnerable to gambling, we could see more of this over the course of 2021.

These guidelines and instructions allow those who are vulnerable to keep away from content, while also allowing those who enjoy and control their gambling to view it and remain connected to the industry.
