Pat Nevin: Morgan Rogers would be a good fit at Chelsea (Interview for NewBettingSites.uk)

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin has told NewBettingSites.uk that he believes Morgan Rogers would be a good signing for Chelsea.
Nevin pointed to Rogers’ adaptability, selflessness and technical skill as key traits that make him an appealing prospect for any team. The Blues have been linked with both Rogers and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Nevin believes Chelsea should opt for the Aston Villa man.
Speaking to NewBettingSites.uk, Nevin said: “I would go with Morgan Rogers over Jamie Bynoe-Gittens,” he said. “Gittens is a good, young, English player and he ticks a lot of boxes, but Rogers is brilliant.
“Another box he ticks for Chelsea is that he’s not a winger, because they seem to be addicted to buying wingers! They need to realise where their strengths lie and where they need to bring in reinforcements. Noni Madueke has been fantastic and Pedro Neto is doing really well, Cole Palmer can play out wide too, plus they’ve got Jadon Sancho. They’re not struggling in that position!
“The problem for Chelsea is that when Palmer isn’t creating or is out of the side, there’s a gap. They sent Joao Felix out on loan and things haven’t worked for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, so there’s a gap there.
“Rogers is very adaptable and can play that position well. He is one of the most selfless players I’ve watched and his understanding with Ollie Watkins is stunning. A lot of teams would want him in their side because he’s a very special player. Rogers would definitely work at Chelsea; Gittens is more of a maybe.”
Avom would struggle to break into Chelsea’s midfield
Chelsea have also been linked with 20-year-old Lorient midfielder Arthur Avom, who Nevin believes would struggle to displace any of Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo or Romeo Lavia in Chelsea’s midfield.
Nevin added: “I have to be honest and say that I haven’t watched Arthur Avom playing for Lorient every week! However, he is a young, talented player and Chelsea seem to have this system now where they look for that kind of player.
“That said, the jump to the Premier League is extraordinary. You just have to look at a number of young players who have joined Chelsea and not done so well. There are examples of players who have taken to it and are playing well, but for each of those there are three for whom it hasn’t gone so well. It almost seems like a scattergun approach.
“What they do seem to do well is managing to sell on the ones who don’t work out for a bit of profit, or at least no great loss. It may well work out for Avom but it’s a big step and he’s only 20 years old.
“The Chelsea midfield at the moment is looking pretty vicious, though! He might have a problem there. Romeo Lavia looks a special talent, and Avom would be in direct competition with him. Lavia is even pushing Moises Caicedo into the right-back spot now! It’s going to be tough for Avom to break in there.”
Nico Williams suits Arsenal more than Chelsea
Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams has also been the subject of interest from Chelsea, but Nevin believes he would be better suited to either Arsenal or Manchester United.
“Nico Williams is a player who, for me, seems a more natural fit for Arsenal than Chelsea,” said Nevin. “When I look at where Chelsea need to strengthen this summer, the wide areas don’t strike me as the positions they need to be prioritising. That said, he can play on both sides and can even do a job as a wing-back.
“When you’re buying a player who can play two or three different positions, it’s like buying two or three players. Chelsea seem to be good at doing that, just look at Noni Madueke who can play on both wings, or Enzo Fernandez who can play a number of positions and roles in midfield.
“Williams has been linked with Chelsea and Arsenal, but Manchester United strike me as the team who needs players in forward positions more than anyone else, but who knows if they can even afford him? They need to buy half a team’s worth of players this summer!”
