Gus Poyet: Aston Villa the most likely English team to win a European trophy
Speaking to NewBettingSites.uk, former Premier League midfielder Gus Poyet gave his thoughts on Aston Villa as the English club with the greatest chance of winning a European trophy this season – even though Man City and Arsenal were recently rewarded with favourable Last 16 ties.
Despite Manchester City being the clear favourites to win this season’s Champions League having won all six of their group stage matches, Poyet outlined the reasons why he thinks Villa are still more likely than City to get their hands on European silverware.
Although Poyet firmly feels Aston Villa are a shoo-in for the Europa Conference League, he couldn’t predict who wins the Champions League.
Aston Villa can win the Conference League
The most likely English team to win a European title this season is Aston Villa, because of how good they’ve been with Unai Emery as their manager. There is something really amazing about these European competitions. Villa are capable of finding a way of winning the Conference League.
I think it’s very hard to win the Champions League in consecutive seasons, and only Real Madrid have truly dominated it in recent years, but this season looks to be open which is a good thing.
Real Madrid have been a bit unlucky with injuries and it’s uncertain whether or not they will have their number nine for the important games. At Bayern, one week you love what they’re doing and then the next you don’t know what’s happened to them. I think the Champions League is going to be very open this year.
It’ll be an opportunity for a team that’s well-settled to go there and step up. Normally, at the end of the campaign the teams that are still in the competition will have got there playing in a consistent way, so I think the likes of Man City, Bayern and of course Real Madrid given their history, will be in the running for the Champions League. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone else turns up and beats everyone to win it.
