Golf Betting Strategy: Narrowing Down the Field

Golf Betting Strategy: Narrowing Down the Field

Golf is a sport that many people enjoy watching and bet on. However, it is not the easiest to work out due to the number of players that are in the field. All of these can win it and given that most golfers on the tour can come up with three or four rounds of brilliance every so often, anyone really can win the tournament.

With that in mind, one of the most popular golf betting strategies is to try and use betting markets that narrow down the field. It is worth saying here that when you do this, you are instantly shortening the odds of whoever you are backing, because they are going up against fewer people, but you are giving yourself a manageable field to work with.

If an outright betting market cuts the field from 90 down to 20, you have far more chance of being able to work out what may happen, and far less chance of being hit by a surprise run from someone over the weekend.

Another option is to forget about the overall picture of the tournament and look at individual two ball and three ball games. These offer much smaller odds but putting a few together can be rewarding for those who like to bet in accumulators.

Betting By Player Region

The best and most common way to split down the field, something that bookmakers offer for most golf tournaments, is to bet on players by region. Here you choose the winner from that region, ignoring everyone else. For example, top USA player, top European player, top GB & Ireland players, top ROW player and more.

Every player will be listed from that region on the betting market, and when you are looking at the scoreboard, only these players count. For example, betting on someone to be top European involves just those players, and if your player finish 12th with 11 Americans above him, they are still the winner despite being in 12th, because they are the highest finishing European.

If you are looking to narrow the field but keep your odds relatively high, this is the way to do it. Markets such as Top USA player on the PGA Tour will cut the field down, but not too much. Even markets like Top European have enough players involved to preserve the odds.

By on Two Ball / Three Ball Games

When golfers go onto the course, they usually play three balls for the first two days and two balls for the last two. This means playing in groups of three and then playing in pairs. Each game that goes out can be bet on, so you are betting on the players taking each other on, and nothing to do with the overall score of the tournament.

The odds on this market are short, you are betting on just two or three-player games, but they offer you the chance to really narrow the field and concentrate on selected groups. For example, if you’ve picked out three golfers you want to follow for the tournament, you can back them to win their groups in a treble. The odds may not be the best, but trebled together they are better, and your players may win this and finish nowhere near the top of the leader board.

If you are specifically focusing on shorter odds to combine players together, or you just want to place one bet on one player at short odds that you really like, this type of market is how you narrow down the field for that.
