Gary Pallister: Arne Slot will have been gutted to miss out on Guehi
Former England defender Gary Pallister has told NewBettingSites.uk that he thinks Liverpool will be kicking themselves for missing out on Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi in the summer transfer window.
Speaking to NewBettingSites.uk, Pallister said: “Marc Guehi is absolutely one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League at the moment. I remember watching him at Euro 2024 and he came into the team because of injury, and he looked so assured in that tournament.
“For a kid who hadn’t had much experience playing international football, he was exceptional. Once that happened, he was always going to be targeted by a lot of the big clubs.
“Missing out on Guehi will be Liverpool’s biggest regret of the summer transfer window. Among all of the big signings they made, their problem has been finding someone to play alongside Virgil van Dijk in the middle of defence. If they’d got Guehi in there, I would’ve put some money on Liverpool lifting the Premier League trophy this season.
“They haven’t done that, though, and it’s starting to show that they’re still vulnerable in defensive areas. Arne Slot would have been fuming that they didn’t manage to get Guehi over the line.
“Guehi is among the likes of Van Dijk, William Saliba and Gabriel in terms of ability. He’s a big part of why Crystal Palace have done so well. Despite everything that was going on at the time, he handled everything with the utmost professionalism, he didn’t spit out his dummy and force the move, he was very respectful.
“Hopefully he gets the move that he desires, but I’d imagine he’s enjoying the ride with Palace because they’re playing some very good football and challenging up there in the Premier League.”
Van Dijk is still the best centre-back in the Premier League
Despite his slight dip in form in recent weeks, Pallister still fancies Virgil van Dijk as the best centre-back in the Premier League.
“I haven’t seen much of Virgil van Dijk this year, but he had a torrid time after that ACL injury,” Pallister said. “It’s a particularly hard injury to come back from as you’ll never be 100% sure that it won’t repeat itself and therefore you can’t trust yourself like you used to.
“It’s also worth considering that the rest of your body starts to compensate for an injury like that so suddenly you start to find issues elsewhere. Last year, though, he was magnificent and back to his very best.
“His partners have struggled with their form at the back, and back in the day he could almost be alone in that area and be fine, but he does need his partner at the back to be on form. I don’t think Van Dijk is capable of being a one-man defence like he used to be.
“That said, I’d still have him at the top of my list for centre-backs in the Premier League.”
