Cheltenham November Meeting Preview Saturday 14th November

The Cheltenham November meeting takes place this weekend, with the main action found on Saturday. Headlining is the Paddy Power Gold Cup, a traditionally competitive 2m4f handicap and this year’s renewal looks to be no different.

We have other competitive races alongside the feature and here is a look at the three big races of the day with our selections listed at the bottom.

1:40pm November Novice Chase (Grade 2)

A small field but one full of quality and heading the way for us is Fusil Raffles for the Nicky Henderson yard. This horse is favourite for the contest, but rightfully so after impressing on two starts over fences so far, winning both by a wide margin.

On both occasions he appears to have learnt something that will make him even better next time around. His most recent success came at Cheltenham, and it is always a positive for any novice to have experience around this course, especially winning experience.

The yard isn’t fully firing yet, but this horse certainly is and Fusil Raffles is our pick here.

2:15 Paddy Power Gold Cup (Grade 3)

The feature of the day and a great renewal in prospect. We go back to last year for our selection, and that is Slate House. This horse was the 4/1 favourite last year and going very well when challenging and falling in the race. He won two starts after that, so the fall hasn’t left too many marks.

He was considered very well handicapped last year, but is only 5lb higher here, certainly not something that is beyond him. He tailed off last year towards the end of the season and looks better fresh, so this may be the right time to catch him.

At an each way price, he is certainly worth another try in this contest. It should also be mentioned that the Tizzard yard appear to finally be hitting top gear which is good news for this horse and the many other stars that they are running over the coming days and weeks.

2:50 Paddy Power Handicap Hurdle (Listed)

This is a really strong contest, with half of the field coming here on the back of a placed effort or win in their previous run. Dandy Dan is the one catching the eye here, having his second run since a wind op and dropping back down to hurdles after a run over fences last time out.

He’s 5lb better off over hurdles at the weights and this could prove to be a really shrewd piece of placing by trainer Kim Bailey. The yard continues to go well too, which is another positive and in what looks to be a wide open contest with plenty of chances, Dandy Dan is the one for us.
