2026 Epsom Derby: Galileo Magnifico

Epsom Derby Image

With World Cup fever gripping the nation ahead of next week’s big kick-off, it takes something special to distract us from plotting a path through the Group stage. However, mention of the Epsom Derby is more than enough for us to press pause on assessing the merits of the Cape Verde squad.

The 1m4f Classic from the Surrey venue is without doubt our favourite flat contest of the year, and it seems that many punters agree, with the Derby regularly attracting the highest turnover of any flat race in Britain.

As ever, here at NewBettingSites.uk, we can’t resist attempting to unravel the Derby puzzle, which in 2026 presents 14 intriguing contenders – all with an eye on the £2 million in total prize money on offer. Here, we highlight a selection of betting offers ahead of the big race, and our Galileo-tinged betting selections.

Galileo: Derby Sire Supreme

There are many approaches to picking the Derby winner, from sectional times and stride patterns to key trials, trainer trends, or simply the office sweepstake. All (barring the sweepstake) have their merits, but in recent renewals one of the most reliable approaches has been to focus on the pedigrees of the contenders. And when we say pedigrees, we are specifically referring to a horse going by the name of Galileo.

Hailing from the yard of Aidan O’Brien, Galileo enjoyed his finest moment at the track when surging clear in the 2001 edition of the Derby. Retired to stud at the end of his three-year-old campaign, Galileo sadly passed away in 2021. However, before his departure, he had cemented his status as the greatest sire of all time.

Breaking the world record for producing the most Group 1 winners, Galileo’s influence on the Derby is particularly impressive. As the sire of five Derby winners, he is the most successful stallion in the history of the race, and his legacy lives on through his sons and daughters. A look back at the past eight editions of the Epsom Classic illustrates that the Galileo blood still runs strong at Epsom Downs in June.

Derby Galileo

To sum up the above table, the last eight winners of the Derby were all either a son or a grandson of the great Galileo. That seems like a good place to start when attempting to unearth the 2026 winner, but how does this year’s field perform on the Galileo scale?

Recommended Bets

When looking through the pedigrees of the fourteen runners, six are grandsons of Galileo, and a seventh is a great-grandson. For those looking to follow the Galileo trend, the following are the runners to focus on:

  • Action, 18/1 with Spreadex - Sired by Frankel. Represents the Derby’s most successful trainer, Aidan O’Brien, and finished second in the Dante Stakes last time out. Has the services of 2025 winning rider Wayne Lordan in the saddle.
  • Ancient Egypt, 16/1 with BetAhoy - Sired by Frankel. Flopped in the Royal Lodge Stakes on his final start at two but bounced right back with a strong staying success in the Listed Newmarket Stakes in May.
  • Balzac, 100/1 with PricedUp - Sired by Japan – another of Galileo’s sons. Only third in the Blue Riband Trial Stakes and Lingfield Derby Trial. Will need to step up on those efforts.
  • Benvenuto Cellini, 2/1 with BetMGM - Sired by Frankel. The choice of Ryan Moore from the four Aidan O’Brien runners in the field. Ended 2025 with defeat in the Futurity Trophy but was impressive in the Chester Vase on his seasonal return.
  • Item, 4/1 with 10Bet - Sired by Frankel. Unbeaten in three career starts, this Andrew Balding runner arrives on the back of a comfortable victory in the Dante Stakes
  • Pierre Bonnard, 11/2 with Spreadex - Out of a New Approach dam, making him a great-grandson of Galileo. Entered the winter as the ante-post market leader. Two defeats have sent him down a couple of rungs on the betting ladder, but he suggested he may be coming to hand at Leopardstown last time out.
  • Poker, 150/1 with 10Bet - Out of the Galileo mare Park Bloom. Nice pedigree, but without a win in three starts and beaten in a Class 2 Novice last time out. Likely we haven’t seen the best of him yet, but he will need huge improvement to figure.

Of the above seven runners, Balzac and Poker haven’t shown enough and are the first to be ruled out. The other five all have something to recommend them.

Overall, it is hard to disagree with the market in rating Benvenuto Cellini and Item as the standout contenders. Both by Frankel and out of a Lope De Vega mare who scored in Grade 1 company in the US, the pair are incredibly tough to split. Item has an attractive unbeaten profile, but the Aidan O’Brien factor just sways us towards Benvenuto Cellini. Oozing star quality in the Chester Vase, he appeared to have developed considerably over the winter and can hand O’Brien a fourth consecutive Derby success.

For those playing each way, Ancient Egypt has done very little wrong and, on a line of form through My Love Is King, arguably shouldn’t be six points bigger than Maltese Cross.

  • Recommended Bet - Benvenuto Cellini to win @ 2/1 with BetMGM
  • Recommended Bet - Ancient Egypt each way @ 16/1 with BetAhoy
