Chris Waddle: Europa League final is all-or-nothing for Spurs and Man Utd

Former Tottenham winger Chris Waddle has told NewBettingSites.uk that he believes the Europa League final is a ‘must-win’ game for both Spurs and Manchester United given their horrendous domestic campaigns in the Premier League.

Waddle points out that the final is not only important for both managers, who have underperformed since joining their respective clubs, but also for the fans to say they have won silverware and give them something to cheer about after a ‘terrible’ season.

Speaking to NewBettingSites.uk, Waddle said: “It’s amazing that both Tottenham and Manchester United are in the Europa League final – they’ve had horrendous seasons in the Premier League. This final is the only thing that could give their seasons a bit of credit having been hammered by the media and the fans all season – they’ve both taken the brunt of many jokes this year. That said, both teams could still come away with some silverware and an open-top bus parade!

“It’s unbelievable when you look at how they’ve played in the Premier League, both clubs have been shocking. This game is a must-win for both teams and it’s so important for the fans, so that they can say they’ve won something this season and give them some bragging rights, especially the Spurs fans who can say they’ve finally won a trophy, and their North London rivals Arsenal haven’t! To come fourth-bottom of the Premier League and still win a trophy, with Arsenal coming away from the season with nothing, Spurs fans would absolutely love that.

“It's a similar story with United, there’s a possibility that their rivals Manchester City will come away from the season empty-handed, too. I could never have called it at the start of the season that this game would be the be-all and end-all for both clubs, but it is. These two clubs were tipped to finish in the top six at the start of the season, but they’re both in the bottom six and I can’t believe it. They’re both grasping onto this Europa League to save face.”

Spurs have been a disaster this season

Waddle branded Spurs’ season as a ‘disaster’, claiming his former side should change their recruitment process and keep hold of their good players to build the team around them instead of selling them.

“Spurs have been poor this year, regardless of injuries,” he said. “They have seven or eight international footballers on the pitch, and they’ve fallen well short of what they should be doing. Overall, they just haven’t been good enough. They’ve lost 20 games this season and that’s a disaster for a football club of that size.

“Even if they replaced Ange Postecoglou, whoever comes in will have the same problem. They may play a different style of football but off the pitch the issues will be the same. Spurs are a selling club and they don’t keep hold of their best players. They’ve got to shake this mentality of selling all their top players and bringing in inexperienced, young players with potential. I don’t care if he’s 31 on a two-year contract, if he’s a very good player, you keep him.

“These are the kind of players that will get you into the Champions League, and by that point he will have paid for himself – the wages become irrelevant. If you want to reach top four, you have to keep your good players and build your team around them. Until Spurs come out of this cycle, they’ll keep having the same problem.”

Bringing Mourinho back to Man Utd would put them back to square one

Waddle commented on Ruben Amorim and the issues he has faced since arriving as Manchester United manager, claiming that replacing him now with someone like Jose Mourinho would put the club back to square one and he deserves another season in charge at least.

He said: “Replacing Ruben Amorim with someone like Jose Mourinho would put Manchester United back to square one, and it would also cost them a lot of money. Amorim needs time, no one can change United overnight, and we’ve seen managers like Erik ten Hag come in and try. They’ve spent a lot of money recently and been left with not a lot, because they’re investing in the wrong players.

“There are a lot of players in their squad that you wonder what they’re going to do with, and the big question is who is going to buy them? You look at Antony who couldn’t hack the Premier League but has been tearing it up in Spain for Real Betis because that league suits him.

“It’s up to Amorim what happens this summer, but I definitely think the board should stick with him for at least another full season. He’s going to be telling them that he needs to get rid of the dead wood in the squad and sign four or five players that he wants. That said, shifting big-money signings like Antony and Jadon Sancho is going to be difficult if you’re looking to get anything close to what they signed them for. No one is paying £70 million for those guys.”
