World Cup Last 16 Preview

last 16 world cup russia table

We have finally reached the last 16 stage of the World Cup after a thrilling round of group games. Germany are out, Argentina have been hugely disappointing, and on the whole this World Cup looks a lot more open than we first thought. Here is a look at the last 16 round, which takes place from Saturday to Tuesday over the coming days.

On Saturday the game of the day is certainly France vs Argentina, and both teams will be hoping to show more than we have already seen from them. The Argentinians have really struggled, but so have France for one of the tournament favourites, and we need to see more from both of them. If they both turn up then this could be a classic, with the edge going to France. Elsewhere on Saturday, Uruguay take on Portugal and when you have Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo on the same pitch you know you are in for an interesting 90 minutes. Like the first game this is a close one and could go either way, but Uruguay have the slight advantage for me.

Two odds on favourites play on Sunday, and both look likely winners, with Spain to beat Russia being one of the best bets of this round. The hosts are lacking in quality to compete with the best teams, as we saw in their 3-0 defeat to Uruguay, and Spain can comfortably get by them here. Croatia are the other favourite playing after they have done nothing but impress so far, they have the ability to get past Denmark and make the quarter finals.

Brazil vs Mexico should be a fantastic attacking game of football, with both teams looking to get the ball down and attack with it. They also have questions to answer defensively so if you are looking for the highest scoring game of the round and the one with most excitement then this may be it. Belgium look to have the easy task of beating Japan to make the last eight, something that they should do comfortably.

England take on Colombia on Tuesday night and assuming James Rodriguez doesn’t play, England have nothing at all to fear here. They are by far and away the better team, and have rested key players ahead of this game to keep fresh. The final game to talk about is Sweden vs Switzerland, which looks to be the most even game out of every one and it looks almost impossible to split these two with any confidence.

Betting Odds

Perhaps the most popular bet of the last 16 stage will be an accumulator on Spain (4/7), Croatia (10/11), Belgium (2/5) and England (5/4) to all win their games. Should those four come in then expect the bookmakers to have a losing last 16 round.
