Have Liverpool FC made progress with Jurgen Klopp?
Ninth place in the Premier League. Not exactly what Liverpool fans were expecting at the start of the season, especially after Brendan Rodgers had engineered wins over Stoke and Bournemouth. There was also the goalless draw at the Emirates where the Reds played a blinder, with Rodgers having acquired Nathaniel Clyne, Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke over the summer. Not that the Northern Irishman was given much time to work with these players. A hangover from last season and the Raheem Sterling transfer debacle saw Jurgen Klopp arrive although has the German actually been that much Kop? Yes, there was the spectacular 4-1 win at Manchester City, the pummelling of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and the fireworks at St Mary’s. But there have also been beatings at St James’ Park, Vicarage Road and the Boleyn Ground. The performance each time was under-par and Klopp seemed at a loss to explain it. Any hopes of a top four spot this season seem remote after losing at home to Manchester United and Sam Allardyce might have a point when he claimed Klopp’s high-intensity pressing leads to players getting injured. Players such as Philippe Coutinho who appears so vital to the team and was at the heart of those wins over City and Chelsea. Klopp will be given plenty of time at Anfield to get things right. Liverpool could yet enjoy success in cup competitions although the evidence so far is that he might be a cool guy but also still adjusting to life in England.
